Main filter cartridge - replaceable module designed for initial (rough) water purification. On-line models use different cartridges to remove certain types of contaminants.

Mechanical cleaning cartridges

Mechanical cleaning cartridges filter water from a wide range of mechanical particles, which can range in size from microscopic to visible to the naked eye.

The name or characteristics of the replacement mechanical cleaning cartridge indicates the nominal filtration capacity in microns. The higher the number is indicated in the characteristics, the more contaminants it passes through, and accordingly it does not clog up longer. Conversely, the lower the number, the more particles are trapped, but the life of the module is reduced.

The filtration capacity of household replaceable cartridges is called nominal because they are not able to remove all particles of the stated size. For example: if the filtering capacity of a cartridge is 5 microns, it will remove particles of this size by 90%, and the remaining 10% will fly through it. This indicator is typical for high-quality plug-in modules.

Therefore, for an apartment we recommend choosing cartridges with a filtering capacity of 5 or 10 microns. They will retain most of the large mechanical particles, and small suspensions, which it will partially pass through, will not damage the plumbing. For a summer cottage or a country house, it is better to choose a cartridge with a higher filtering capacity or install several stages of cleaning.

The use of cartridges has its own specifics, for example, we will give the most common ones:

1. Foamed polypropylene cartridges - remove mechanical impurities from water, such as rust, sand, scale. When the module exhausts its resource (it has delayed the maximum possible amount of impurities and clogged up), it greatly reduces the pressure in the water supply system. Water is having difficulty passing through a clogged cartridge. Which signals the need to replace it.
2. Cartridges made of polypropylene thread - also cope with mechanical impurities in water. When choosing such a cartridge, you should pay attention to the presence of a plastic core and the fact that the threads are “welded” to the core. Otherwise, the water will not be cleaned.
   Unlike cartridges made of expanded polypropylene, filaments do not reduce pressure. This is important when installing a main filter in front of a gas water heater or boiler. For these devices, the incoming water pressure is an important indicator.
3. Polyester or cellulose cartridges - Recommended for cleaning large volumes of water.The filtration area of ??such modules is higher, which means that the resource is also higher. Such cartridges are suitable for installation in a country house, in a country house or in a catering establishment as one of the cleaning stages. Because of their shape, these are called petal cartridges.

Removal of chlorine and organic compounds

For these purposes, the so-called sorption cartridges are used. Activated carbon acts as a filtering material in such cartridges. Due to its structure, activated carbon is capable of absorbing a large amount of impurities. In addition to chlorine and organic compounds, carbon cartridges are capable of removing heavy metals and dissolved iron and manganese in small quantities. There are two types of carbon cartridges.

Filling cartridges made of granular coal have a high sorption capacity and well purify water from chlorine compounds and heavy metals. The advantage of this cartridge is the low pressure drop.

Pressed activated carbon cartridges (carbon block) are produced by sintering coal dust. As a result of sintering, the coal loses a part of its sorption capacity, but at the same time the filtering capacity of such a module is set at the level of 5-10 microns. Therefore, they are good at removing organic impurities. On the other hand, the pressure drop in such a cartridge is higher than in the filling one.

If you need to purify water with a high content of undissolved suspensions (for example, sand) and at the same time there is organic matter in the water, Then cleaning in two stages should be used: first, mechanical cleaning, and then the carbon cartridge. This will significantly extend the life of the carbon cartridge and save you money.

Iron and Manganese Removal

Yellow spots on plumbing, as well as yellowed things after washing are the result of the presence of a large amount of iron dissolved in water. Purification of water from iron is a difficult task and replaceable modules cope only with a small concentration: up to 3 mg / l.

Iron-free cartridges effectively remove iron, but clog and fail much faster.

Polypropylene thread impregnated with ion-exchange material - such a cartridge is a little less effective in coping with its main task. However, the pressure drop in such a cartridge is lower and its life is higher.

Water softening

Everyone has encountered scale deposits on a kettle or other heating device. This problem is typical for water with a high content of hardness salts - hard water.

Unfortunately, cartridges cannot solve the problem of water softening for a long time. This is due to the fact that the water softening technology involves the periodic restoration of the filtering material with a solution of sodium chloride. To regenerate the load, the cartridge will have to be constantly removed and not every module is structurally suitable for regeneration.

It is worth choosing cartridges for water softening only if the consumption is supposed to be small. Otherwise, we recommend paying attention to a cabinet or bulk water softener. The initial investment will be higher, but the operation is much more comfortable.

Dimensions of filter cartridges

There are only three popular standard sizes of filter housings and cartridges in the world.

10 "Slim Line or 10" SL - the standard for use in drinking filters (the so-called Point of Use), that is, when cleaning is required for one tap. For example, to remove the smell of chlorine in the shower.

10 "and 20" Big Blue or 10 "and 20" BB - these filters are installed at the water inlet to the apartment (Point of Entery), summer house, summer cottage or cottage.

To select a standard, you need to multiply the approximate monthly water consumption by six. The resulting consumption for six months is comparable to the resource of the selected type of cartridge. The resource of the cartridge should be close to the half-year water consumption. Replacement of the cartridge in the filter should be carried out every six months for permanent residence or once a season for seasonal residence in a country house. If this is not done, then the pollution accumulated by the cartridge will begin to flow into the water supply system and the water after the filter will only be dirtier.

Therefore, most often when choosing cartridges for water purification in country houses and summer cottages, the choice falls on the 10 "BB and 20" BB standards.
